THE DECORATION OF AN early 20th century shingle captain’s house in Old Greenwich, Connecticut architecturally reimagined by Joel Barkley. The interiors contrast expansive, light-filled rooms within a waterside addition and moody, intimate spaces carved out of the original house. The client dreamed of an alluring home that would radiate the nonchalant sophistication of a bygone era without feeling like a vintage set piece. 1950s French lighting and a mix of stylish mid-century furniture is blended with 19th century heirlooms and contemporary artisanal furniture and textiles designed for the house. Especially noteworthy is the living room sofa upholstered in custom-printed floral fabric whose pattern becomes denser at the skirt. Photos by Paul Costello |
